――When thinking, people will reach a point when they wonder which to decide on, but for GACKT-san, at such a point in time, how do you choose?
GACKT: I’ll think about which is tough, which is arduous, and which is painful, then pick the one that’s more painful or tough.
――Why is that?
GACKT: Assuming there are two choices, A and B, and if both take the same about of time to complete, I’ll be able to gain more experience from the tougher option. When I imagine myself after overcoming my choice, which will be better? The me who has gained a lot of experience, or the me who has none? To this question, the me with experience is better. If it takes the same amount of time, I want to be a version of me that has a lot of experience, and more than that, the version of me that has grown stronger.
――How stoic.
GACKT: It’s not stoic. I just don’t want to worry. The action that wastes the most time is to worry. People who worry will always worry. I think that amount of time spent doing that in one day is probably a total of 3 to 4 hours. Taking it as 3 hours, that will be 90 hours in a month, and 1,000 hours in a year. That’s an enormous amount of time. But y’know, time spent worrying is different from time spent thinking.
――Indeed, I realise that there are many times when worrying is being mistaken as thinking.
GACKT: That’s a big mistake. When thinking, all the information you need to get your answer is there, and it’s a puzzle that you have to assemble from that, while worrying is to look at a puzzle with how and wonder or imagine what the picture actually is. If you’re looking at it and imagining it, then put a piece in it. Thinking while piecing it together and deriving the answer from there, is truly thinking.
――Is thinking while assembling like this the method that GACKT-san goes through when writing your songs? This song is currently the ending theme song for the anime 『TRICKSTER -Edogawa Ranpo 「Shonen Tanteidan」 Yori-』, but I feel that there’s a different consciousness at work than the usual production of receiving an offer then producing the song.
GACKT: I did receive an offer but, that was a request for a bright song that can make you feel the future.
――A bright song… It is not, this song.
GACKT: Because I’m not a commercial writer, I can’t do that (laughs).
――Do you mean that you’re unable to?
GACKT: No, it’s not that I’m unable to, it’s been like this since a long time ago but, in any case, I told them that I’ll try and asked them to judge what I’ve come up with. Then I ended up with this song. As expected, I can only put whatever’s going on at present into a song. At that time, I was going on a tour for my concept tour, the 『VISUALIVE』 「Saigo no Tsuki -LAST MOON-」, and was performing the songs I wrote for it with that theme so, I didn’t expect to be writing any more songs then. But because I was asked to write the ending theme song for the anime, I thought, I guess I’ll try writing a little more, and what came out from inside me was this song. When I tried writing it, what went into this song, in other words more than just the opening of the Pandora’s box, was the pain from becoming aware of our own sins, which I realised was also connected to the Fiend with Twenty Faces who appears in 『TRICKSTER -Edogawa Ranpo 「Shonen Tanteidan」 Yori-』. But if they listen to this and think it isn’t so, then it means that it’s not meant to be.
――I thought that the song was clearly written as a song that’s close to the anime’s story and world view.
GACKT: I also told the director that if it’s no good it’s alright but he said it’s super cool, and he liked it. Thank goodness he said that it’s cool (laughs). If he said “Isn’t this different from what I asked for?”, then I’ll have no choice but to say “Yeah, it’s different~” (laughs). But I can’t write according to what’s given anyway. I can only write with what’s inside me. That’s why I no choice but to let what I produce get evaluated. It’s great if they like it can will use it, but at the same time, if they don’t like it, it can’t be helped and it’s not the end anyway. It can’t be helped, because that’s my way of life.
――This collaboration was a huge success wasn’t it.
GACKT: Instead of just this time, it will definitely be like this every time.
――That’s why everyone always asks GACKT-san to write songs for them right.
GACKT: Maybe. But if that’s so, then please don’t tell me about the theme (laughs). Like, why are you telling me that?
――Everyone want’s to give it a try anyway……? (laughs)
GACKT: Ahahaha (laughs). Like, please stop it? I don’t do those kinda things (laughs).
