GACKT reveals a fierce episode 「It was the real life Walking Dead (laughs).」

On April 5, at Marunouchi Piccadilly 3, the 「Roaring & Cheering Screening Event」 for the huge hit 『Kong: Skull Island』 that is currently in cinemas, was held and GACKT, who did the Japanese dubbing for Tom Hiddleston’s character Conrad, made an appearance.

Following IMAX, 3D, and 4DX, the「Roaring & Cheering Screening Event」allows the audience to get the full taste of the power of this movie by letting them watch and hear the movie with sound systems used for live concerts, giving them an “experience” that goes beyond a「movie」, also this is the first event of it’s kind that adds on the audience-participation type event of a Cheering Screening.

GACKT came to support the movie and experience for himself this first-of-its-kind event, and a candid conversation unfolded.

At the MC’s introduction, GACKT entered. As this is the first ever Roaring x Cheering Screening Event, he was greeted by the explosive noise from the audience’s stick balloons and the audience’s loud cheers. GACKT commented「How is everyone? I’m surprised by how high everyone’s tension is」.

With regards to his conversations with the movie’s cast who visited Japan on March 15 for the Japan premiere,「 I heard (from Tom Hiddleston) that the filming of the movie was tough. The on-site location in the jungle was really hot and humid, that it feels like it makes you dispirited. On the red carpet, the visiting cast kept saying that it’s too cold. On stage, Brie Larson left halfway because it was too cold, I was surprised and wondered if that’s really okay (laughs)」he said with humor.

Also, considering that MIYAVI acts in the start of the movie, GACKT was asked about acting in a Hollywood movie,「Well, if the timing’s right, I suppose. When I first watched the movie, I was surprised that someone who looks exactly like MIYAVI appeared (laughs). If I were to act in a Hollywood movie, I want to play King Kong. I think I’ll be good at the scenes where I save people though」, he said, making the audience laugh.

After it was released, with regards to scenes that should be looked out for during the second time watching it, he said「Halfway in there’s a Vietnam scene. Warehouses are lined up next to each other and it really expresses that era’s atmosphere in Vietnam well… Actually when I told my American friend that I’m involved in the dubbing, lots of the actors who I know started contacting me, saying『I appeared in that Vietnam scene』. I was suprised at that, and I asked if everyone went to Vietnam for that, but they said that the scene was actually filmed in a studio. It’s a scene that you wouldn’t have expected it to be filmed in a studio. Since then, since my friends are appearing as well, please look for them (laughs)」.

And, this day’s event is the first time that both the Roaring and Cheering screenings are being held at the same time. In terms of “firsts”, GACKT was asked about his most nerve-wracking episode in his life, and he said「In the past, I went to Hokkaido’s Shizunai (now, Shinhidaka) for a calendar shoot. It was a quiet town without many people around, so I went to a bar to drink at night without my bodyguards. Around 1 a.m. at night, I started hearing people’s voices outside the shop, and I wondered if the people in Shizunai gather at night instead. Just like that, it was around 2 when I wanted to step out, when the staff stopped me. It seemed that the villagers actually gathered and came to see me, and he said『Please don’t go outside』. When the police were called, around 6 police officers came over but there were around 500 people outside so that’s pretty impossible as it is. The car was around 6 meters away, so I tried heading that way anyway but in the end I was surrounded by 500 people and got mobbed. It was a real life Walking Dead (laughs)」, revealing a fierce episode.

At the end, he left a message for the audience, saying「My voice in the dubbed version, I don’t mean to brag but I think it’s a pretty good voice. At the start you might feel that it’s weird to see Tom’s face speaking with my voice but halfway through that feeling will disappear and you’ll come to hear it as Tom’s voice! If you watch it around 4 times, you’ll recognise my voice as Tom’s voice. Recently it’s possible to watch movies on tablets and such platforms but I think that watching it in a cinema is still the best after all. Especially since it’s a great chance to experience the best sound with these speakers that are specially used for the Roaring Screening. Please do enjoy both the visuals and the sound」, and with that, the event concluded.
