――When thinking, people will reach a point when they wonder which to decide on, but for GACKT-san, at such a point in time, how do you choose?

GACKT: I’ll think about which is tough, which is arduous, and which is painful, then pick the one that’s more painful or tough.

――Why is that?

GACKT: Assuming there are two choices, A and B, and if both take the same about of time to complete, I’ll be able to gain more experience from the tougher option. When I imagine myself after overcoming my choice, which will be better? The me who has gained a lot of experience, or the me who has none? To this question, the me with experience is better. If it takes the same amount of time, I want to be a version of me that has a lot of experience, and more than that, the version of me that has grown stronger.

――How stoic.

GACKT: It’s not stoic. I just don’t want to worry. The action that wastes the most time is to worry. People who worry will always worry. I think that amount of time spent doing that in one day is probably a total of 3 to 4 hours. Taking it as 3 hours, that will be 90 hours in a month, and 1,000 hours in a year. That’s an enormous amount of time. But y’know, time spent worrying is different from time spent thinking.

――Indeed, I realise that there are many times when worrying is being mistaken as thinking.

GACKT: That’s a big mistake. When thinking, all the information you need to get your answer is there, and it’s a puzzle that you have to assemble from that, while worrying is to look at a puzzle with how and wonder or imagine what the picture actually is. If you’re looking at it and imagining it, then put a piece in it. Thinking while piecing it together and deriving the answer from there, is truly thinking.

――Is thinking while assembling like this the method that GACKT-san goes through when writing your songs? This song is currently the ending theme song for the anime 『TRICKSTER -Edogawa Ranpo 「Shonen Tanteidan」 Yori-』, but I feel that there’s a different consciousness at work than the usual production of receiving an offer then producing the song.

GACKT: I did receive an offer but, that was a request for a bright song that can make you feel the future.

――A bright song… It is not, this song.

GACKT: Because I’m not a commercial writer, I can’t do that (laughs).

――Do you mean that you’re unable to?

GACKT: No, it’s not that I’m unable to, it’s been like this since a long time ago but, in any case, I told them that I’ll try and asked them to judge what I’ve come up with. Then I ended up with this song. As expected, I can only put whatever’s going on at present into a song. At that time, I was going on a tour for my concept tour, the 『VISUALIVE』 「Saigo no Tsuki -LAST MOON-」, and was performing the songs I wrote for it with that theme so, I didn’t expect to be writing any more songs then. But because I was asked to write the ending theme song for the anime, I thought, I guess I’ll try writing a little more, and what came out from inside me was this song. When I tried writing it, what went into this song, in other words more than just the opening of the Pandora’s box, was the pain from becoming aware of our own sins, which I realised was also connected to the Fiend with Twenty Faces who appears in 『TRICKSTER -Edogawa Ranpo 「Shonen Tanteidan」 Yori-』. But if they listen to this and think it isn’t so, then it means that it’s not meant to be.

――I thought that the song was clearly written as a song that’s close to the anime’s story and world view.

GACKT: I also told the director that if it’s no good it’s alright but he said it’s super cool, and he liked it. Thank goodness he said that it’s cool (laughs). If he said “Isn’t this different from what I asked for?”, then I’ll have no choice but to say “Yeah, it’s different~” (laughs). But I can’t write according to what’s given anyway. I can only write with what’s inside me. That’s why I no choice but to let what I produce get evaluated. It’s great if they like it can will use it, but at the same time, if they don’t like it, it can’t be helped and it’s not the end anyway. It can’t be helped, because that’s my way of life.

――This collaboration was a huge success wasn’t it.

GACKT: Instead of just this time, it will definitely be like this every time.

――That’s why everyone always asks GACKT-san to write songs for them right.

GACKT: Maybe. But if that’s so, then please don’t tell me about the theme (laughs). Like, why are you telling me that?

――Dall'intervista 1

Ho anche detto al regista che se non è buona va bene lo stesso ma lui ha detto che era assolutamente fantastica, gli è piaciuta

――Quando penso, le persone raggiungeranno un punto in cui si chiederanno cosa decidere, ma GACKT-san, ad un certo punto, cosa sceglierebbe? 

GACKT: penserò a cosa è difficile, a cosa è arduo, e cosa è doloroso, poi scelgo la cosa più dolorosa e difficile. 

――Perchè?

GACKT: Assumendo che ci siano due scelte, A e B, ed entrambe richiedono lo stesso tempo per essere completate, sarò in grado di ottenere molta più esperienza dalla scelta più difficile. Quando penso a me stesso nel prendere una decisione, quale sarà meglio? Il me stesso con esperienza, o il me stesso senza esperienza? A questa domanda, il me stesso con esperienza è migliore, e più di tutto, la versione di me che è cresciuta più forte. 

――Stoico.

GACKT: Non è stoico. Solo che non mi voglio preoccupare. L'azione che fa perdere più tempo è il preoccuparsi. Le persone che si preoccupano si preoccuperanno sempre. Io penso che il tempo speso facendo questo in un giorno sia probabilmente dalle 3 alle 4 ore. Ponendo il caso che siano 3 ore, saranno 90 ore al mese, e 1000 ore in un anno. E' una quantità di tempo enorme. Ma sai, il tempo speso preoccupandosi è diverso dal tempo speso pensando.

――Sicuramente, capisco che siano molte le volte in cui il preoccuparsi viene scambiato per il pensare. 

GACKT: Questo è un grande errore. Quando si pensa, le informazioni di cui hai bisogno per avere la tua risposta sono lì, ed è un puzzle che devi assemblare con quelle e immaginare che tipo di disegno possa uscire fuori. Se tu lo guardi e lo immagini, poi puoi mettere i pezzi. Pensare mentre si mettono insieme i pezzi derivati dalle risposte, è il vero pensare. 

――E' pensare mentre si assembla in quest modo il metoto che GACKT-san usa per scrivere le canzoni? Questa canzone è la sigla finale per l'anime 『TRICKSTER -Edogawa Ranpo 「Shonen Tanteidan」 Yori-』, ma sento che c'è una coscienza diversa nel lavoro della normale produzione del ricevere un'offerta e produrre una canzone.

GACKT: Ho ricevuto un'offerta ma, era una richiesta per una canzone luminosa con cui puoi sentire il futuro. 

――Una canzone luminosa… Non lo è, questa canzone.

GACKT: Perchè non sono un autore commerciale, non posso farlo (ride).

――Intendi che non ne sei in grado?

GACKT: No, non è che non sono in grado, è stato sempre così, ma in ogni caso, ho detto che ci avrei provato e avrei visto cosa ne sarebbe uscito fuori. Poi sono arrivato a questa canzone. Come previsto, io posso solamente inserire in una canzone quello che sta succedendo nel presente. A quel tempo, stavo iniziando il mio concept tour, il  『VISUALIVE』 「Saigo no Tsuki -LAST MOON-」, e cantavo le canzoni che ho scritto con quel tema quindi, non mi aspettavo di dover scrivere poi altre canzoni. Ma siccome mi è stato chiesto di scrivere una canzone come sigla finale di un anime, ho pensato, penso che proverò a scrivere un altro po', e quello che era dentro di me è stato messo nella canzone. Quando ho provato a scrivere, quello che è uscito da questa canzone, in altre parole oltre ad aprire un vaso di Pandora, è il dolore che proviene dai nostri stessi peccati, che ho realizzato era connesso anche con il Demone con Venti Facce che appare in  『TRICKSTER -Edogawa Ranpo 「Shonen Tanteidan」 Yori-』. Ma se lo avessero  ascoltato, e non avessero pensato che fosse così, significa che non era destino.

――Ho pensato che la canzone fosse chiaramente scritta collegandosi alla storia dell'anime ed alla visione del mondo. 

GACKT: Ho anche detto al regista che se non andava bene faceva lo stesso, ma lui ha detto che era super fantastica, e gli è piaciuta. Grazie a Dio ha detto che è meravigliosa (ride). Se avesse detto "Non è diverso da quello che avevo richiesto?" allora non avrei avuto nessuna scelta se non rispondere "Sì, è diversa~" (ride). Ma non posso scrivere ciò che è stato deciso comunque. Io posso solo scrivere cosa c'è dentro din me. Ecco perchè non ho scelta ma far valutare cosa produco. Sarebbe magnifico se piacesse e se venisse usata, ma allo stesso tempo, se a loro non piace, non posso farci niente e non è la fine comunque. Non posso farci nulla, questo è il mio modo di vivere.

――Questa collaborazione è stato un gran successo vero?

GACKT: Più che questa volta, sarà così ogni volta.

――Ecco perchè tutti chiedono a GACKT-san di scrivere canzoni per loro giusto?

GACKT: Forse. Ma se è così, per favore non ditemi il tema. (ride). Tipo, perchè mi stai dicendo questo? 

――e se qualcuno ci vuole provare comunque……? (ride)

GACKT: Ahahaha (Ride). Per favore, la smettiamo? Io non faccio queste cose (ride).

This song is already on air as the ending theme song for the anime 『TRICKSTER -Edogawa Ranpo 「Shonen Tanteidan」 Yori-』, in which he is also involved in as a voice actor. In this song, he, who powerfully forges ahead with his own path, sends a passionate message to listeners, about humans face the sins they carry with them and move forward despite their sorrows. We visited him to ask him about the feelings that he has put into the song, but instead this time’s interview starts with an unexpected question. GACKT: What do you think “elegance” means?

――Elegance…… To be both materially and mentally blessed, it has the image of being in a state where there is no inconvenience, I really long for it.

GACKT: So… you long for elegance. An elegant lifestyle, an elegant way of spending time, to have an elegant heart…… Elegance as a word is profound. When I started living overseas, and decided to live an elegant life, I bumped up against the word “elegance”. Everyone thinks that elegance is to have a lot of things and to be in a state of comfort but that’s actually not the case. For example, I’m now living overseas, and I see an exceptionally beautiful landscape, hear exceptionally beautiful sounds…… While being able to hear the sound of water flowing, the sound of birds chirping, I thought, anyway I’ll try zoning out for 2 to 3 hours from now and try to enjoy some elegant time. Since then, I realised that elegance does not refer to having an abundance of things, but instead it is a word that refers to the heart. To become truly elegant, I suppose people who have been inflicted with this modern illness have to train themselves.

――What do you mean by training to become elegant?

GACKT: Avoid modern things, starting with your phone, and try to spend a couple of hours just looking at the scenery. But I can’t really do it. This is a sickness of the modern man. In the past I’d go to the temple and sit in Zen meditation, and simply become free. Then, until I become free and my heart becomes empty, I’ll be thinking of a lot of things in my head. After thinking, and thinking, and thinking, it’ll suddenly go blank but that’s probably my heart getting reset. People need to have balance in their life. However, at present, everyone goes on living without resetting their hearts, and even if you think 「Ah, that’s beautiful」 for just a moment, this isn’t linked to resetting your heart. GACKT: The phrase 「Inheritance of sin (tsumi no keisho) 」 is not about something as specific as that. For me, I think that humans are already living with sin the moment they are born. For example, humans are the only creatures on this earth that destroys the balance and such. If the earth is being considered like a living organism, beings that are being born with sin, in other words, humans, are like the “cancer” in it. We destroy a lot of things, cause a lot of things…… But if you were to say that it would be better if humans didn’t exist, you won’t be allowed to. That’s why, when we’re being born into this world when our own sins, I think that we have to face those sins, accept them and go on living. In the first place, people have the ability to think, an ability that no other animal has, yet don’t you notice that most people don’t think? They wake up when the alarm goes off in the morning, eat the breakfast that they have to eat, then when it’s time, they go to the office, go home. Each of their movements don’t come with thought, they’re just responding. I think that this is extremely dangerous.

――Like adverse effects occurring when you don’t think.

GACKT: People who don’t normally think can’t think even when you suddenly tell them to think. It is especially so since humans are born with something akin to a “Pandora’s box”. In that box are the things that are like a human’s sins. If you live without facing that, it becomes human nature for you to commit crimes while not knowing what is sin. Originally, you were supposed to recognise what’s in the box yourself, and if you can think about it and live on, you’ll be able to find balance but…… That’s why, I say 「Think about it」 and 「Face it」. It’s not up to me to judge whether it’s right or wrong. Accepting it and living on with balance is the mission that humans have imposed on them. Incidentally, to have balance is to live while accepting your own nature even if you think that you’re a biased person, and recognise the gap between yourself and what’s expected for social conformity.

――When I got this message from this song, I thought that it would be very difficult to recognise and accept your sins. Furthermore, when I watched the MV for this song, in the aggressive video, I felt something like an emptiness and frustration at being unable to accept their own sins.

GACKT: That’s one of the answers too. The side of the story when they are unable to accept it.

――It got very painful just by watching it.

GACKT: I suppose the MV also symbolises our present society. This is also linked with 「Think about it」 but, right now, most people in the world leave the judgement of right or wrong to someone else. Like if the majority says that it’s correct then they’ll say it’s correct, it’s not something that they’ve decided for themselves by thinking. But what’s truly important is what you, yourself, wants to do. Moreover, how will you compromise with society and live with it. You won’t be able to convince 100％ of them but, you’re able to get a compromise right? So, to get a compromise, you have to face the question of who you are. As long as you’re alive, big things will happen as a result, and at that time, all the responsibility will be thrown to someone.

In questa canzone, lui, che è fortemente spinto avant nel proprio percorso, invia un appassionato messaggio agli ascoltatori, sul viso umano del peccato che portano con sè e nonostante questo vanno avanti con le loro sofferenze. Siamo andati a trovarlo per chiedergli riguardo ai sentimenti che ha messo nella canzone, ma questa volta l'intervista è iniziata con una domanda inaspettata. Comunque, iniziando, abbiamo ottenuto un prezioso episodio con lui che racchiude un sacco di argomenti e ciò che lui pensa ora e come lui si riflette in un lavoro come questo!

GACKT: Cosa pensi che significhi “eleganza”?

Però, non sapevo cosa fare con il tempo a disposizione.

――e' diventato disagevole?

GACKT: Esattamente. Perchè non c'era spazio nella mia mente. Avrei presto iniziare a giocherellare con il mio telefono o qualcosa del genere. Quando l'ho notato, ho pensato, ciò è come una malattia. Da qual momento, ho realizzato che l'eleganza non si riferisce ad avere abbondanza di cose, ma invece è una parola che si riferisce al cuore. Per diventare veramente elegante, suppongo che le persone che sono state inflitte da questa malattia moderna debbano allenarsi.

――che cosa intendi allenarsi per diventare eleganti?

GACKT: Evitare le cose moderne, iniziando dal proprio telefono, e provare a passare un paio di ore guardando solamente il paesaggio. Ma non riesco a farlo. Questa è la malattia dell'uomo moderno. Andrei al tempio e mi siderei in medizione Zen, e semplicemente liberarmi. Poi nel momento in cui mi sono liberato ed il mio cuore svuotato, mi troverò a pensare ad un sacco di cose nella mia testa. Dopo aver pensato, pensato e pensato, diventerebbe improvvisamente vuota tanto che il mio cuore sarebbe resettato.La gente ha bisogno di bilanciare la propria vita. Comunque, attualmente, tutti vanno avanti a vivere senza resecare i propri cuori, e anche se si pensa 「Ah, questo è bellissimo」solo per un momento, non è collegato al reset del proprio cuore. In termini del proprio cuore, non è qualcosa che esiste in te, ma è un concetto astratto,e questo è ciò che la società moderna trascura troppo

――Percepisco questo tema come il fatto che le persone stiano trascurando qualcosa che dovremmo cominciare ad amare, è anche collegato alla nuova canzone, 『Tsumi no Keisho ～ORIGINAL SIN～』.

GACKT: La frase 「Inheritance of sin (tsumi no keisho) 」non riguarda qualcosa di specifico come quello. Per me, penso che gli umani vivano nel peccato dal momento stesso in cui sono nati. Per esempio, gli umani sono le sole creature sulla terra che distruggono il bilanciamento naturale. Se la terra fosse considerata come un organismo vivente, esseri che sono nati con il peccato, in altre parole, umani, sono come il “cancro” in essa. Noi distruggiamo molte cose, causiamo molte cose…… Ma se si dovesse dire che sarebbe stato meglio se non esistessero gli esseri umani, non saremo autorizzati. Ecco perchè, quando siamo nati su questo mondo con I nostri propri peccati, credo dobbiamo affrontare i nostri peccati, accettarli e andare a avanti a vivere. In primo luogo, la gente ha l'abilità di pensare, un'abilità che nessun altro animale ha, non noti già che la maggior parte delle persone non pensa? Si svegliano quando suona la sveglia la mattina, fanno colazione perchè devono mangiare, poi quando è ora, vanno in ufficio, tornano a casa. Ognuno dei loro movimenti è dettato dal non pensiero, semplicemente agiscono. Credo che questo sia estremamente pericoloso

――Come effetti avversi che si verificano quando non si pensa

GACKT: La gente che normalmente non pensa non può nemmeno pensare quando improvvisamente gli si dice di pensare. .
