The comic from the celebrated Maya Mineo, known for being the author of Patallliro!, has been turned into a movie by director Takeuchi Hideki of the Thermae Romae and Nodame Cantabile series. GACKT, who plays the transfer student returning from America who is actually a Saitama native, Asami Rei, speaks of what things were like filming for this spectacle-filled movie and about his own image.

My image of the character was Bancoran*

Q: In addition to the unexpected live-action adaptation of this, the bold casting was also a hot topic, wasn’t it?

Although I initially felt “It’s impossible for me to play a high school student, isn’t it?” and was uneasy about it, when we met for costuming and went through our lines, that uneasiness disappeared. The moment I felt that “this movie will definitely turn out to be interesting” and “it’s a hit” was on the first day of filming. When I entered the set, the attention to detail in the set was amazing. The locations changed with each scene too, so I even became worried about whether we might overrun the production budget (smiles).

Q: The reproduction of Master Maya’s original and that aestheitcal world view is wonderful.

For me, I simply decided that I’d act as Patalliro’s (Jack Barbarossa) Bancoran. I acted my imagining what Bancoran would be like if he was a student. Something like a character who never loses his head and is always cool, who always looks at things cold eyes.

Q: Was the visual your idea too?

I’ve done all kinds of makeup when I used to be in the visual-kei rock band Malice Mizer, so all the ideas were brought out and I tried having it take shape myself first. Then I put on the wig and asked “What about this vibe?”, and I got an OK. However, I imitated Bancoran all the way down to the makeup, and if I put on blue eyeshadow, I’d look particularly comical, so even if it’s aesthetical, I didn’t put that on, and instead paid attention to bringing out the contours of my eyebrows and eyelashes.

Q: There’s a rating check scene that seems to be something completely suggested by you, but what scene does GACKT-san like?

I like the scene where the representatives of each branch of Saitama gathers and gets roused to action. During rehearsals, I did it with something like the speech that was given before the Battle of Kawanakajima in the period drama in mind, and that tension was brought out. “Do you have any idea what Saitama is being called? Da-Saitama**, Kusai-tama***……” Such a line is honestly nonsensical (smiles). However, having everyone, including myself, very passionately act out those lines with tears in our eyes is so exceptionally lame and funny.

Absurd creations from a director with a normal appearance

Q: Were ideas presented for the script too?

Regarding the script, basically, first of all, Takeuchi-san was curious about how he should arrange it considering that it is based off an incomplete original. What I found interesting was that the original story was made to run along in parallel with another story. It made the tempo of the movie so good that I thought he was just brilliant. At the end, even the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in Shinjuku and the crowds appear, and I think that this scale-up is a unique flow of Takeuchi-san’s too, and that favourite scene of mine which I mentioned earlier too, along with that rating check scene, all of it left me with an impression of, “This guy’s playing with me, huh”. Isn’t he having too much fun (smiles).

Q: With a stance that you’re there to play thoroughly at the shooting site?

We acted with everything we had to give the director whatever he seeks as much as possible and to even go beyond that as much as possible too. That’s my stance. In the case of this movie, there are scenes that aim to make people laugh, but Takeuchi-san will definitely adjust its direction with the idea of “wanting to make a movie that makes the audience snicker when they see your serious attitudes”. I like that he is consistent as a director without being swept away. I’m very impressed by how Takeuchi-san creates such absurd movies despite that his appearance is that of a regular middle-aged man. Because, look, more often than not, there are a lot of people who have fantastical goals but end up with a normal product (smiles).

To continue as GACKT

Q: The original is born out of the masochism of laughing off the inferiority complexes of Saitama natives but has GACKT-san, who appears perfect from an observer’s perspective, ever had to face complexes too?

I have so many complexes it could kill. Everyone probably thinks that I can do anything and everything but I’m in fact clumsy, so there’s a lot I can’t do. But I hate losing, so I’d spend time alone to practice to death. There’s a lot about me that I hate, but I have to deal with it throughout my entire life. If I keep hating myself, it’s just pitiful, so I decided that I’ll put in effort to become a version of myself that makes me think that “this version of me isn’t too bad either”, and bit by bit, I came to hate myself less and less. That’s why I think that there are a lot of people who end up hating themselves because they won’t or can’t try their best. I think that if a person earnestly does their best, earnestly follows through with whatever they do, it may be funny, but perhaps they’ll come to think that they’re not as bad as they thought.

Q: The figures of Asami Rei, who becomes the ray of hope for Saitama natives, and GACKT-san, who makes give dreams to people as a star, seem to overlap together, but do you ever feel that your influential power and the expectations and cheering from those around you sometimes become a burden? What do you think of continuing to exist as a star?

Thinking of those things as negatives and feeling stressed isn’t going to be positive for me, so I stopped thinking in a high-strung manner. I simply want to see the happy faces, surprised faces, and touched faces of my fans. I put together lives that will make them think “I’m glad that we got to meet” in the end, and I think that the physical and mental condition of my existence is where I stand during lives, so there are things that I absolutely have to do daily. If I think that these things are heavy, I can stop. But that’s my job, and that’s my destiny. At the same time, above that, I live how I want to. When I want to create, I create; when I want to do something, I do it. Ultimately, I want to think that I’ve doing things based on my own will, and I want to think that I’ll simply be happy as long as I can see those smiles. Because I’m always looking for a reason for me to be me.

A movie that you’ll laugh and call lame

Tonde Saitama, the original story by Maya Mineo, author of the popular comic Patalliro!, has been very seriously adapted into a live-action movie of a magnificent scale by director Takeuchi Hideki of the Thermae Romae series. Nikaido Fumi and GACKT co-stars as leads in this movie. The story is set in a fictional Japan where Saitama natives are severely persecuted by Tokyo-ites. Nikaido’s Dannoura Momomi, the student council president of the prestigious Hakuhodo Academy in Tokyo, meets GACKT’s Asami Rei and eventually gets thrust into a battle for Saitama’s freedom…… What the hell is that!?

Two compatriots from Okinawa

Q: Both of you were born in Okinawa, right?

GACKT: The first time we met was at a production that was set in Okinawa (TV drama Tempest) and there were a lot of Okinawans who were gathered. How old are you now, Fumi-chan?

Nikaido Fumi (below, Nikaido): 24.

GACKT: That means you were 17 back then…… How young.

Nikaido: I was young (smiles).

GACKT: I was in my late 30s. But there were a lot of people there back then.

Nikaido: The first time we met was just an introduction.

GACKT: We didn’t share any scenes for filming, so it was just introductions. After that, we met on a variety program.

Q: What was your first impression?

Nikaido: Since it was a production that was set in Okinawa, GACKT-san made me laugh when he said, “Just as I thought ‘I’ll repay my island with this!’, I’m not playing an Okinawan character but a Chinese one instead”. Seeing that, I had the impression that he’s probably a funny person. We didn’t work together in the drama, but when we had introductions, I greeted with “Nice to meet you, I’m Nikaido”, and he responded very kindly with “Nice to meet you”. I had the image that he was someone shrouded in mystery, but I remember thinking that he’s a gentle person.

Q: From your perspective, what do you think of the “Kanto region hierarchy” that was depicted in the movie and the relationship between Tokyo, Saitama, and Chiba?

GACKT: Having such feelings might be different for other prefectures but even in Okinawa, there’s a difference in image between the North and South area.

Nikaido: That there is.

GACKT: The dialects are completely different too. My great-grandfather apparently lived in the northern area where there weren’t even any traffic lights, so whenever I go there it’s like being dragged off into the countryside (smiles). When you tell Okinawans you were “originally born over there”, you’d often get laughed at.

Q: Outsiders don’t know this, right?

GACKT: That’s the exact same thing. The thing between Tokyo and Saitama within the Kanto region…… Those from other prefectures would say that there’s no difference, or laugh and call it lame. But for those people too, they’d more or less have those feelings in the areas they come from. Between the town you live in and the town next door, or between yourself and the next door family, and so on. Humans are just the sort of creatures that live in that narrow space between inferiority and superiority, and this is a movie that will have you laughing and calling it lame from an observer’s point of view. Though we didn’t film it with that intention in mind.

What were your actual high school days like?

Q: You’re playing the roles of high school students, but what kind of high school student were you?

Nikaido: I was a beyond normal high school student. School was fun. I had lots of friends and I played a lot every day too. I started working at 12, and furthermore, my father was from Tokyo, so I was “born in Okinawa then became a high schooler in Tokyo”, so that, again, is a slightly different feeling.

Q: Were you perceived as different, like in the movie, because we weren’t born in Tokyo?

Nikaido: There were people who really loved Okinawa among my classmates in high school. I’ve never touched a shamisen myself, but I get the feeling that there were more instances when I felt respect when I get told things like “That person knows how to play it!”.

Q: GACKT-san’s high school days were the kind where you put a school teacher’s car up against the wall, right?

GACKT: Where did you get that information from? (Smiles). Ah, well…… This is something that came to mind recently, but I get the feeling that the world has become too strict over a number of things. There’s a tendency that people won’t just call something ‘lame!’ and then let it go. Be it affairs or love, just whose problem is it? Aren’t both bad? And then they’d exaggerate and make a big fuss over it. Public order is good, but there are too many rules and freedom is gradually disappearing. I feel like in the past, we’d laugh and forgive more often.

A kiss scene that prioritised a “beautiful picture”!

Q: This movie isn’t there just to diss Saitama, but the maturity in it is the sublimation of sincere laughter, right?

GACKT: Although the posters and such do indeed say “diss battle”, it doesn’t mean that “It’s packed with everything in the world that’s considered as a diss!”, but I think that it’s a taste that’s necessary for it to come to a certain conclusion. If you watch the movie, you’d get it but adults would seriously argue that it’s extremely lame. They’d say, “isn’t this what the world is actually like now?”. I do wonder if there’ll be more occurrences of people watching this and then ending the topic with a “how lame!”.

Q: Nikaido-san’s Momomi’s dramatic change in expression following the kiss scene between Momomi and GACKT-san’s Rei left quite an impression on me.

Nikaido: GACKT-san has said this, that the most important thing isn’t the feelings of the role but it is to create a beautiful picture. I think that it is an acting technique that is focused on creating the picture with consideration of the timing, how things look from this angle, and so on instead of how I’m going to move for this emotion. With regards to Momomi’s change after the kiss, the director said that he wanted Momomi’s expressions and his attitude to Rei to change after that, so performing that gap was fun.

GACKT: Originally, a kiss scene holds important meaning in a drama because it is something that comes from an elevation of emotions and 2 people having a relationship with each other. While there are kiss scenes that focus on that, there are also those that feel overwhelmingly unreal and just don’t work, like this one in the movie that is only needed to deliver an impact which makes the story more convincing. In this story, doesn’t everything in a moment with the kiss between me and Momomi? That becomes the starting point. To make it obvious that the story changes all at once with a “bang!”, an extremely beautiful picture was needed and between the cameramen, me, and Fumi-chan, we worked on the timing numerous times. To make it as beautiful as the manga, to make the story convincing. There are many such “starting points” in this movie.

Detailed entertainment and epic proportions at the cinema

Q: What parts of the movie would you like your audience to enjoy?

Nikaido: I think that this has turned out to be an exceptionally funny movie. Please do watch it in theatres, and I’ll be glad if you’d enjoy both the detailed entertainment and epic proportions at the same time.

GACKT: It’s an exceptionally lame story with rather meaningless content about freeing Saitama natives who have been oppressed by Tokyo citizens. I think that if you watch it, you’d probably laugh and say that it’s lame over and over again until the end. We’ve also put particular attention to creating grand scenes that can’t be fully enjoyed unless you’re in a theatre.

---

Nikaido, who looks dignified despite being only 24 years old, and GACKT, who exudes an impressive aura just by his mere presence. They’ve conveyed their mutually respectful relationship with every word exchanged. Joining them in this movie are other people with rich presences as well, like Kyomoto Masaki, Nakao Akira, Maro Akaji, and Takenaka Naoto. Even the suave and handsome Iseya Yusuke displays an impactful performance, turning the gag manga with an absurd setting into a serious spectacle. It is only to be expected of Director Takeuchi to give the movie such a wonderful sense with the world view that makes the cast members feel natural!

Quanti anni hai, Fumi-chan?

Nikaido Fumi (in basso, Nikaido): 24.

GACKT: Significa che avevi 17 anni allora ... Quanto sei giovane.

Nikaido: Ero giovane (sorride).

GACKT: Avevo circa trent'anni.

GACKT: Da dove hai preso quell'informazione? (Sorride). Ah, beh ...

The miraculous movie adaptation of Maya Mineo’s Tonde Saitama which sold over 620,000
copies starring Nikaido Fumi and GACKT! Unheard of! The “Saitama dissing movie” of love and
hilarity opens in cinemas on Friday, 22 February. Before it’s release, Nikaido Fumi & GACKT
have arrived in Fukuoka to convey the “charms of Saitama” in the Nihon Saitama-ka Keikaku!

—— This is Nikaido-san’s first male role, so what was it like when you first received the offer?

Nikaido: Initially, I was asked what I thought about a female playing this role, but the original
story has strong perspective, so we had a discussion about whether I could take this male role if
possible, and then I took that challenge. The world view is rather absurd, so I thought that my
playing a male role might just work (smiles).

—— Did GACKT-san smoothly accept the offer to play a high schooler?

GACKT: I initially rejected it. I thought that such a high schooler doesn’t exist and that it’s just far
too impossible. And then the author, Master Maya Mineo said that he hoped that I would do it
because that’s the sort of thing he wants to transcend. I myself am a fan of Master Maya
Mineo’s works, so since he’s said that to me, I did it.

—— While acting the role of a high schooler, was there anything in particular that you kept in
Mind?

GACKT: Nothing. But during the very first time we filmed, Fumi-chan was dancing alone
in an exceptionally extravagant set of a student council president’s room even though the
camera wasn’t rolling. When I saw that, I felt confident that this movie will go well. From that, I
clearly understood the world view, so I could proceed smoothly from there.

Nikaido: I don’t remember that, but perhaps it was the atmosphere of the site, but I get the
feeling that perhaps was drawn by the grandeur of the set and began to dance. But I guess it
was a good thing if that was what gave GACKT-san a peace of mind and believe that things
would be alright.

—— Did you have fun playing a male role?

Nikaido: I had the chance to take part in scenes that male roles typically have, like taking part in
a fight, and such powerful scenes so that was very enjoyable. I think those who watched the
Tonde Saitama trailers would know too, but this time, it’s a story that has quite a lot of gags but
in the second half, it becomes a story of love and revolution, so I’m truly honoured to have been
given the chance to play a male role that confronts that.

—— Is there a cast member who left quite an impression on you, or is someone viewers
should take note of when watching the movie?

GACKT: For me, Kyomoto’s acting really tickles my funny bone, and during filming, the Kyomoto
magic is just too much (smiles). In the movie itself, the world view is memorable too, but it’s as if
Kyomoto’s world hits back against that. Anyway, Kyomoto Masaki-san leaves an impression.

Nikaido: There’s a scene of a fight between Saitama and Chiba, and there, on one side it’s the
Saitama natives while on the other it’s the Chiba natives, you can affirm that things like that. It’s
a scene I really love, so I think it’d be great if you’d pay attention to that.

—— What do both of you think is Saitama’s charm?

Nikaido: The other day, I had the chance to go and apologise to the governor of Saitama, and it was then when the governor told me, “Saitama is, in any case, a tolerant place, an open-minded place”. It was just as he said, and I could feel the generosity of this place considering that they let us make such an absurd movie and worked with us on it too.

GACKT: In one word, nothing (smiles). There’s nothing at all. But everyone says that Saitama natives say ‘The fact that there’s nothing is a good thing’. But in general, there are a lot of good people among Saitama natives.

At this point, there was a surprise where the two of them gave out a famous confectionary from
Saitama, Soka Senbei, to the fans gathered!

—— Lastly, please say something to everyone in Fukuoka.

Nikaido: Everyone, please take care of Saitama. Thank you for being here despite the cold. I’ve
felt Fukuoka’s warmth, please do enjoy the movie!

GACKT: Knowing that I’d be staying in Fukuoka today, I was really looking forward to it. This time I’ll be heading off just like that, but next time, I’d definitely come and visit Fukuoka and have fun! But if there’s an event when it’s released, we’d come to Fukuoka first, so please do wait for us.
To those from Fukuoka, from Hakata, you might have absolutely no interest in Saitama, but it’d be nice to know that Kanto has such a problem, just because. I think that this movie is this
century’s biggest, no, the biggest comedy in the history of Japanese film. I’ll be glad if you’d
laugh while saying that it’s lame when you’re watching it. Please do go and watch it multiple
times!

Tonde Saitama the movie will begin its nationwide roadshow on Friday, 22 February.
