Eventually, the deep and bitter feud between Yoshimune and Ieshige produces unexpected turmoil, and as a huge conspiracy attacks the shogunate, the ambition of Tokugawa Muneharu, played by GACKT, takes advantage of the chaos and bares his fangs.

Muneharu is the head of the Owari Tokugawa family, the top of the three main branches of the Tokugawa clan. He believes that "enjoying things in a flashy way is essential for the people," and he completely ignores Yoshimune's frugal policies, setting up entertainment facilities such as theaters under the castle of the Owari clan that he governs, and allowing singing, dancing, and music to be performed widely. His extravagant behavior has attracted attention, and some people say that he is more suitable to be a shogun than Yoshimune.

Muneharu, who is known as a "kabuki actor," also stands out in his fashion sense, dressed all in black with a flashy haori coat and smoking a kiseru pipe that is over one meter long. This was the first time I met Matsudaira-san. Miike's works are unique in terms of camerawork and story development. This film is a period drama, but the tempo is good, and I have high expectations for what kind of work it will be. I think that Miike's way of thinking is quite different from previous period dramas, but I would be happy if it can be an opportunity for young people to think that period dramas are interesting.

This time, I received the offer with the thought "I'll be happy to do Miike's work," so I would like to do my best to complete what I have to do. I think I am expected to be an accent in the world of "Abarenbou Shogun," a presence that does not bore the viewer, so I would like to play that role well.

--The costume is also very flashy, but how do you interpret the role of Tokugawa Muneharu?

Muneharu is a very "cool" person who lives by his own way of thinking. I think that his overly long tobacco pipe and flashy costume are a reflection of his way of life that does not fit into a mold. I think he is a very interesting person, and I feel that it suits me.

I am very happy that "Abarenbou Shogun" is returning after 17 years. Some people of different generations may not know it, but I would be happy if they watch this work and feel that "period dramas are interesting." Also, in recent years, the number of period dramas has been decreasing, so I think that this is a work that older people will also enjoy. I would be happy if everyone, from children to the elderly, could watch and enjoy it together as they spend the New Year holidays with their families.
