GACKT Official X Update. Translation below

This comes out of the blue, but I was involved in an accident.

I wasn’t sure if I needed to mention it,
but it was the kind of accident—a first in my life—
that makes you wonder, “Can something like this really happen?”

Honestly,
I want everyone to know
that such unexpected things can occur.
And I want to tell you all to be careful… though,
in life,
no matter how cautious you are,
you can still get caught up in the unforeseen.

That was the kind of night it was—one where I learned that lesson firsthand.

It happened two days ago.

I had finished a meal with some friends
and was driving a friend who lived nearby
back to my place.

It was exactly 10:00 PM.

We were waiting for the light at a large intersection.

My car was at the front of the right-turn lane.
There were about five cars lined up behind me.

There were also about ten cars in the left-turn lane.

From the left side of the intersection,
several cars were making right turns
and heading toward us.

Of course,
up to this point, it was just an ordinary, everyday scene.

But then, the next moment…

Something unexpected happened.

One of the cars turning right from the left-hand road
suddenly charged straight toward my car
for some reason.

My friend in the passenger seat shouted,

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!!!”

I locked eyes with the driver
of the oncoming car.

He was looking right at me.

My mind was instantly filled
with a barrage of question marks.

And the words
involuntarily escaped my lips:

“You’ve got to be kidding me…”

A second later,
the car that had been charging straight at us
slammed head-on into my Jaguar.

Then, it came to a stop.

I couldn’t comprehend what had just happened.

But,
for some reason I can’t explain,
my friend and I immediately jumped out of the car
and got ready to fight.

No, seriously—
I don’t even know myself
why I thought to do that. I suppose
my body just moved on instinct.

A friend and I rushed over to the other car
and opened the driver’s side door.

“Hey, who the hell are you?”

Then,
the driver looked at us
and said something unbelievable.

“You guys…
Why are you parked
in the oncoming lane…?”

…Huh?

For a moment,
I couldn’t grasp
what he was even saying.

Just then,
drivers from the cars lined up behind me
started getting out, too.

And
everyone shouted at him:

“You’re the one who swerved into the oncoming lane!!!”

The scene was in an uproar.
I was dumbfounded.

I mean,
I seriously couldn’t make sense of it.

Did this guy
swerve into us on purpose?

Anyway,
we got him out of the car.
That’s when I finally realized.

He was absolutely wasted.
He was slurring his words.

He didn’t even understand
what he’d done.

For the first thirty minutes after the crash,
he kept saying the same thing over and over:

“Why are you parked
in the oncoming lane?”

But
the moment the police arrived,
he suddenly started to panic.

Maybe he finally realized
what he’d done
and the gravity of the fact that he’d been drinking.

“You’re pretty drunk, aren’t you?
You don’t even realize
what you’ve done, do you?”

From that point on,
the only words coming out of his mouth
were just…

“Sorry… Sorry.”

That was it.

In the end,
we didn’t arrive at the police station
to handle the paperwork until 11:00 PM.

When I explained the situation,
even the officers on the night shift were shocked.

“Does that kind of thing really happen?”

Yeah,
that’s exactly what *I* want to know. I was the one most surprised by it all.

In any case,
the silver lining in this misfortune
was that no one was injured.

Still,
drunk driving is far more than just dangerous.

You lose the ability to even grasp
where you are driving.

If you drive in that state,
you could snuff out someone’s life in an instant.

It’s too late
once the damage is done.

And then,
there was something else that surprised me.

The car.

The other vehicle
had a badly crumpled bumper
and was a total wreck.

Yet,
as for my Jaguar…

There was hardly a dent,
and the only visible damage was some chipped paint.

…Jaguars really are amazing, aren’t they?

Actually,
I had been thinking about
trading it in for a new one soon.

But
this accident changed my mind.

I think I’ll take good care of this car
for a while longer.

I never imagined
that getting into an accident
would deepen my love for my car.

You really never know
what life has in store.

Well,
it’s certainly better
if things like this don’t happen.

But
no matter how careful you are,
you can still get caught up in the unexpected.

I suppose that’s just part of life.

And
it made me realize something again:

“Anything short of death is just a scratch.”

Well,
in this case, the car really did just get a scratch.

I’ve learned
yet another lesson in life.
