On the 23rd, GACKT (52) held “GACKT PHILHARMONIC 2025 Maou Symphony THE REVIVAL” in Tokyo. This was his first attempt at a new style of performance in April this year, fusing an orchestra with a band. He performed a total of 13 songs, captivating 1,600 fans.
To combine the solemn atmosphere of a classical concert with the excitement of a dignified live band performance, and the worldview of “Maou Symphony,” the orchestra performed standing up while wearing masks. After much trial and error, the band’s tuning was finely adjusted to avoid clashing with the orchestra’s sound. “Performing and listening standing up is common in rock, but it’s impossible with an orchestra. But I want the performers to experience it, and I want the audience to experience it too,” he said, captivating fans with a stage performance that made the most of the power of the sound.
He said some orchestra members were opposed to the unusual attempt to perform while standing and wearing masks, and with a wry smile, he said, “There were complaints. I guess we had to start discussing it from there.” Still, he remained stubborn, saying with a smile, “We only allowed people with the physical strength to participate, but now we’ve gathered people who are willing to create something new together. I’m glad they’re so eager to join us.”
He continued, “I actually believe that listening to music while sitting is different from listening to it while standing. I believe sound is not something you experience just with your ears, but something you feel with your whole body.” He also mentioned that the first floor was an all-standing venue. “You could tell everyone wanted to stand, and based on ticket sales, the first floor seats sold out immediately. I think a lot of people want to listen standing up,” he said, expressing his appreciation for the enthusiasm of the audience.
He’s also teamed up with Billboard Classics for a nationwide tour next summer. “I come from a classical background, and I’ve heard that there are orchestras that can’t continue because of the coronavirus pandemic,” he said, expressing his passion for orchestras. “I hope I can be a bridge that conveys the greatness of classical music to people who like rock, and the energy and profoundness of rock to people who like classical music.”
