Okinawa- born musician GACKT, 47, visited the Okinawa Prefectural Office on January 25 and donated 4.6 million yen to help rebuild Shuri Castle in Naha City, which was destroyed by fire in October last year.

The donation came from all the proceeds from the t-shirts and keychains sold as “items to rebuild Shuri Castle” during his national tour in January and February. Wearing a face shield, he handed the check to the person in charge and said with a smile, “This is from my fans and me who love Okinawa.”

He appeared in the 2011 NHK drama “Tempest,” which was set in the Ryukyu Kingdom and filmed at Shuri Castle. He said, “I felt a sense of loss when I saw the photo after it was burned.”

“I think it’s an important symbol for Okinawans,” he added, “and I think there are many people who want Shuri Castle to be rebuilt as soon as possible. I hope we can be of some help, even if only a little.”
