―― In the 『LAST VISUALIVE』, the love between Noritsune and Yoshitsune was depicted, can we think of those two songs as tributes to their love……?
GACKT: No, that’s that. I think that it should just be left to the emotions of those who have watched it though. I think, in the 『LAST VISUALIVE』, this song is a song that is set in present day. Afterall, when someone asks “What is the message that the 『LAST VISUALIVE』 is trying to convey?”, it is that stories and tragic happenings that occurred in the past, even if we change the form of it, they still exist in present day. Not only the 『LAST VISUALIVE』, but all the concerts that I’ve had, although they are long, when you watch it, it feels as if they ended in the blink of an eye. That, I think, is the same as life. It seems like it’s really long but when you look back at it, it was a mere moment. It passes in the blink of an eye. Don’t you think so? That’s why, although those who came to watch it will cry from the transience (of the narrative from the past depicted), they will think 「But, this isn’t just a story, is it? It’s just like everyone’s lives, isn’t it?」. From there, having to think for themselves about what to think, how to feel, what to do, I guess that’s the “blank space” in my view of the world? I don’t particularly say things like 「This is this answer. So please do this」. Just simply, 「From here on, think about it yourself, why not do what you need to do?」.
―― In the 『LAST VISUALIVE』, you were dressed in a white shirt when you sang 「Kimi Dake no Boku de Iru Kara」, and in the fully animated MV for this song as well, the characterised GACKT-san too wore a white shirt. Is there a link to that?
GACKT: Since this song is the opening theme song for an anime named 『TRICKSTER』, this MV was wholly left to the production team of 『TRICKSTER』. We thought, let’s make an interesting MV that can be connected to the characters of 『TRICKSTER』, and that’s what we got.
―― The opening theme for 『TRICKSTER』 was an aspiration from the anime production team. How did you feel when you received the offer?
GACKT: I thought, 「I want to respond to those feelings」. Because we’re an independent label instead of belonging to a so-called mega-record company, such instances don’t come around much. Well, although in this era being an independant label isn’t special, that said, independent recording labels rarely get asked to do anime theme songs so, I’m happy that they decided to nominate us.
―― Having watched the MV, which scene left a particularly deep impression on you?
GACKT: About deep impressions, with this expression, I thought, artistes who don’t show their faces sure are good (laughs). Using just their voices, and never having to show themselves. How about that?
―― That’s a unique impression (laughs). The man jumping because he wanted to see the girl in the bird cage so badly, and even as his feet collapsed under him he jumps desperately…… I could feel that this depiction was really dramatic.
GACKT: Hahaha! That expressionism is only possible because it’s an anime.
―― Doing it in live action is impossible isn’t it (laughs). GACKT-san appears as a voice actor in the anime for the character, the Fiend with Twenty Faces. How did you interpret him?
GACKT: Well, he’s an exceptionally cold character. Nevertheless, I thought that it was interesting to portray his warped heart that can’t distinguish between good and evil, and the coldness in him.
―― Having done voice acting thus far, do you like it?
GACKT: I like it. If you ask me 「Which do you like?」, in actual fact, since a long time ago, I’ve liked voice acting more than acting.
―― What’s the charm of it?
GACKT: For voices, it’s because you can deliver each and every word with convincing power. If you do that in acting, it becomes a bad performance. As I thought, it’s the difference between the realistic and unrealistic. In the real world, if you make each line stand out too much, it becomes too scripted and ends up sounding like lies instead. However, in the unreal world, it wouldn’t work out unless you put your soul into your lines. That’s the difference.

―― Nel 『LAST VISUALIVE』, l’amore tra Noritsune e Yoshitsune è stato descritto, possono queste canzoni essere un tributo al loro amore……?
GACKT: No, è quello. Io penso che dovrebbe essere lasciato alle emozioni di coloro che lo hanno guardato. Penso, che nel『LAST VISUALIVE』, sia una canzone che si svolge nei tempi d’oggi. Dopo tutto, quando qualcuno chiede “Qual è il messaggio che il 『LAST VISUALIVE』 prova a trasmettere?”, è quelle storie e i tragici avvenimenti che sono successi in passato, anche se cambiamo la loro forma, esistono ancora nei giorni d’oggi. Non solo il『LAST VISUALIVE』, ma tutti i concerti che ho fatto, nonostante siano lunghi, quando li guardi, sembra come se finissero in un batter d’occhio. Quello, penso, sia la stessa cosa della vita. Non dico cose particolari come 「Questa è la risposta. Per favore fallo」. Solo semplicemente, 「Da ora in avanti, pensa da solo a questo, perchè non fai quello di cui c’è bisogno?」.
―― Nel 『LAST VISUALIVE』, indossavi una camicia bianca mentre cantavi「Kimi Dake no Boku de Iru Kara」, ed anche nel MV animato per questa canzone, che ha portato GACKT-san ad indossare una camicia bianca. C’è un collegamento?
GACKT: Siccome questa canzone è la sigla di apertura dell’anime 『TRICKSTER』, questo MV è stato interamente lasciato alla produzione di 『TRICKSTER』. Abbiamo pensato, facciamo un interessante MV che possa essere connesso ai personaggi di 『TRICKSTER』, ed ecco cosa è uscito.
―― La sigla di apertura per 『TRICKSTER』 è stata un’ispirazione per la produzione delll’anime. Come ti sei sentito quando hai ricevuto l’offerta?
GACKT: Ho pensato, 「Voglio rispondere a questi sentimenti」. Perchè siamo un’etichetta indipendente invece di provenire da una compagnia musicale megay, certe cose non capitano spesso. Beh, nonostante in quest’epoca essere un’etichetta indipendente non sia molto imporante, detto questo, le etichette indipendenti raramente vengono contattate per fare sigle di un’anime, sono felice di nominare me.
―― Avendo visto il MV, quale scena ti ha impressionato di più?
GACKT: Sulle impressione profonde, con questa espressione, ho pensato, gli artisti che non mostrano la propria faccia sono bravi (ride). Usando solo le loro voci, senza aver bisogno di mostrare sè stessi. Cosa pensi riguardo a questo?
―― E’ un’impressione unica (ride). L’uomo che salta perchè vuole vedere disperatamente la donna nella gabbia d’uccelli, ed anche se i suoi piedi stanno cedendo lui continua a saltare…… Sento come se la cosa descrivesse una realtà drammatica.
GACKT: Hahaha! Questo impressionismo è possibile solo perchè è un anime.
―― Farlo in un’azione live è impossibile vero? (ride). GACKT-san appare come voce nell’anime per il personaggio, il Demone con Venti Facce. Come lo hai interpretato?
GACKT: Beh, è un personaggio eccezionalmente freddo. Tuttavia, ho pensato che fosse interessante descrivere il suo cuore deformato che non sa distinguere tra buono e cattivo, e la freddezza in lui.
―― Avendo fatto doppiaggio finora, ti piace?
GACKT: Mi piace. Se mi chiedi 「Cosa ti piace?」, in realtà, fino a poco tempo fa, ho amato il doppiaggio più della recitazione.
―― Che fascino ha?
GACKT: Per le voci, tu devi trasmettere ogni singola parola con un potere convincente. Se lo fai nella recitazione, diventa una brutta performance. Come pensavo, è la differenza tra il realismo ed il surrealismo. Nel mondo reale, se reciti ogni riga con troppa convinzione, diventa troppo recitato e finisce a sembrare falso.
