GACKT Official X update. Translation below
I saw the news that in Australia, social media will be banned for those under 16.
I’ve always thought of social media as a tool that grants freedom, but also as a blade that can break people’s hearts if used improperly.
It’s unreasonable to leave something that even adults can wield completely up to children.
So I can understand the government’s decision to draw the line.
However, this raises a number of questions.
Social media like YouTube are dangerous, so they’re banned.
But what about television?
Will television be banned for those under 16?
In terms of the flood of information, the structure is roughly the same.
TV can sometimes be more stimulating.
The logic of targeting only social media and treating television as a sanctuary is unreasonable.
Furthermore,
social media is already a foundation of our lives.
It’s unrealistic to completely shut it down,
and simply keeping people away from it won’t help them develop their judgment.
There are many loopholes,
and the only ones who should be protected are the children who are at a disadvantage.
In the end,
the issue isn’t tools, but autonomy.
Whether it’s television or social media,
the essence is training people to know what to choose and where to draw the line.
Rather than government regulation, it would be more helpful to teach parents, schools, and individuals
how to live in a world overflowing with information.
The question is not
how to take away freedom, but how to raise people who can handle that freedom.
What a confusing world we live in.
What do you think?
